IDEA
The ENVELOPE concept began in 2001 in response to the senseless death of five fashionably dressed young snowboarders in the Australian Alps. Developed during a project that required designing a snowboarding jacket from a single pattern piece (as part of an academic challenge to respond to the design concern of social and environmental sustainability in fashion), creator Anthea van Kopplen's envelope garment represents a serendipitous moment plucked, captured and frozen during the design process.
Established in 2008, ENVELOPE recaptures the meaning of fashion as an idea. Under this umbrella the ENVELOPE retail and workshop environments bring continuing value to traditional manufacturing techniques in the context of visual, political, environmental and social conversations about the state of the world we live in. ENVELOPE provides an environment and a context for people to think about what they can do with the clothes they wear, encouraging greater community engagement. Taking a more critical approach to the purchase of fashion designs that are long-lasting, tailored and well made.
